CreateScriptGordianKnot

Start GordianKnot. In the bottom pane click open.d2v and select yourfile.d2v. GordianKnot will now open a preview window. Study this carefully, unless you already created the d2v with Force FILM turned on. You will usually find one of three patterns: no interlaced frames (should be the case if you have Force FILMed the video), 2 frames out of every 5 is interlaced (NTSC: IVTC needed) or every frame is interlaced. If every frame is interlaced, try to study it a little closer and see if the same picture is present in two consecutive frames, i.e. a pattern like AB BC CD. If this is the case (usually PAL videos) then you must edit the .AVS later.

Now go to the resolution tab of the main window. Input resolution should have been automatically set to NTSC or PAL depending on your .d2v file. You need to select 16:9 or 4:3 though. This information can be found in the DVD2AVI statistics window. In the crop pane, select pixel, and increase the numbers until all black borders have dissappeared from the preview window. Then increase the width crops to make them even, and if you have AviSynth2.5 then the numbers for height should also be even.

Select the bitrate tab. Select correct codec, or use DivX5 if you intend to do XviD. Select your intended CD size, and number of CDs. Then select audio bitrate (A and/or B) and select the types of audio you intend to use in AVI-overhead pane. Now you should have a bitrate to use later, as well as a bits/(pixel*frame) (BPP) value. Go back to the Resolution tab. Find a resolution that corresponds to BPP ~0.2-0.25. This is only intended as a starting point and should be confirmed with a compression test.

If you do not intend to (or can!) run a compression test go to the preview pane and click on save&encode. Select field operation depending on what you found earlier in the preview window. (no interlace->no field operation, 2/5->IVTC, all interlaced->fielddeinterlace) In the last case you should select no field operation and then click Edit AVS. Find the line #telecide(guide=2,post=false) and uncomment it and save the avs.

Users of DivX3.11 and 5.02 can and should run a compression test. Go to the preview pane and click on save&encode. Select field operation depending on what you found earlier in the preview window. Now click on 'test in the compression test pane and wait. When the test is ready you will find a percentage next to the BPP value. If this value is between 60 and 80% everything is OK and you can go on to the final encode. If not, you should change resolution so you get a value between 60 and 80%. Then redo the compression test to make sure it is OK.

Now you can go on to the final stage. The encode. Go to the preview pane and click on save&encode. Select field operation depending on what you found earlier in the preview window. (Have you read that before? ;) And finally you get to press encode.

This will bring up another window. It will open in the tab corresponding to the DivX version you selected in the bitrate tab earlier. For DivX3.11 make sure both ecf and Recalculate bitrate is selected. For DivX5.02 you should enable b-frames (if you have the pro version) and Recalculate bitrate. GMC and psychovisuals are optional. Some like them, some don't. My recommandation is to try them and use what you feels give you the best result. Psychovisuals->heavy have been reported to create some artifacts and should be used with caution. Now go to Audio 1 tab and select the .ac3 file that includes the audio you want to use. If you want to keep the AC3 sound then select Just Mux. If you want to have MP3 sound then you can use the quick option and just set the desired bitrate, as long as this is at least 128 kbps. If you intend to go lower you should use the experts option and manually add the required parameters for azid and lame. Then go back to the DivX 3.11/5.02 tabs and press Add Job To Encoding Queue. You will then get a popup asking you if you want to start encoding right now. If you answer no, remeber that the encoding queue is cleared when you exit GordianKnot.
