AviEncodingUsingDivX5Enc

This is a semi-automatic method that requires a .avs to have been created in advance. You will also have to add audio to the file afterwards. At the moment this guide assumes DivX 5.0.3

  • First check that the VirtualDub path is set correctly to your VirtualDub or VirtualDubMod installation, as well as the 'Use Fast Recompress' being selected.
  • Open the .avs in the 'Input/Output' pane. This should setup all files you need.
  • Select 'Variable bitrate mode->M-pass 1'
  • Choose your desired bitrate
  • Quarter pixel should not be activated in 5.0.2. It is supposed to be improved in 5.0.3 so you may test it. GMC is also a thing you may try, some likes it, some don't. B-frames though should be activated. It will lower the bitrate needed as well as improving playback reliability. B-frames does require a little more of the playback unit, so if you have a very low-end processor, like P3-500 or similar, you might want to leave B-frames off.
  • Click 'new job'
  • Select 'Variable bitrate mode->M-pass N'
  • Bitrate modulation can be left at 0 (constant quality), but most films will benefit from lowering the value slightly (-0.01 - -0.10). Depending on the number of passes you intend to run, the impact of this value decreases with more passes.
  • Now click 'new job' once for each pass you intend to run.
  • Start the encoding by clicking 'start all jobs'. After this you will not be able to access DivX5Enc until everything is done, so make sure you have made everything right before starting.
